Uttarakhand High Court Bats For Virtual Election Campaigns

Amid the sudden surge in Covid cases courtesy omicron variant, the fate of election campaigns across the country is treading a thin path. To rally or not has become a serious talking point in political circles. Not to forget, how mass election campaigns came under the line of fire for playing their part in last's year's Covid spread.

The Uttarakhand High Court on Wednesday has added a new dimension to the whole debate. In view of the spike in Covid cases, it has asked the ECI, if election rallies can be shifted to online mode. The prospect of online voting also remains a question of deliberation in this case.

The High Court was hearing a PIL filed by one Shiv Bhatt. Bhatt has sought postponement of the elections in the valley state and also raised red flags on the infrastructure constraints in Uttarakhand to deal with a situation of unprecedented rise in Covid numbers.

The election commission of India is expected to file its reply by January 12.
