Law Should Not Be Perceived As Business: Chetan Sharma, ASG, Delhi High Court

The legal profession must remain rooted in its foundational ethos of service and justice, rather than being seen as a commercial enterprise, said Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Chetan Sharma.

Speaking at an event, Sharma highlighted the growing commodification of the legal field, warning that it risks eroding public trust in the judiciary. "Law is not a business; it is a solemn responsibility towards society. The legal profession's nobility lies in its commitment to uphold justice, not in chasing profit," he said.

Sharma also urged young lawyers to prioritise ethics and public service over financial gains, stressing that the credibility of the judiciary is directly linked to the integrity of its practitioners. "The rule of law thrives on the unwavering commitment of lawyers and judges to fairness and impartiality," he added.

The discourse comes amidst rising concerns over the accessibility and affordability of legal services, with many calling for reforms to ensure that justice remains equitable and inclusive.
