The Indian legal institutions are not short of intellectual capacity and can compete with any challenges, but there are several issues. This was pointed out by Dr. A V Narsimha Rao, Director, ICFAI Law School, Hyderabad. He was addressing the gathering at BW Global Legal Summit and Legal Leader Awards 2023.
Stressing on the significance of strong legal education institutions, he said that if the legal institutions are not strong, the building called law will collapse. He said that one of the most significant issues today is to identify whether we are creating professionally relevant professionals, as the approach to legal education is changing according to the times. There are a lot of gaps when it comes to providing best options and the government, regulators and people should come together to adjust those gaps. There is no shortage of intellectual capacity but there are issues like bureaucratic red tapism, and more that need to be dealt with.
Dr Rao also spoke about how technology has become a part of the judicial system as well. “Today we see artificial intelligence in the Judicial system. We can see Robo lawyers coming to argue in the court of law. Then there is chat GPT as well which is being used in the court. We have all seen the fate of the cases when Chat GPT is used providing information to advocates or judges. How can we counter the challenges thrown by Chat GPT and the likes? We also need to see whether our legal institutions are ready to take this challenge,” said Dr Rao.
Giving an example of Crypto currency, he said that it took the Supreme Court to give a direction to how the crypto wave was handled in India. He said that it is important to see whether the legal institutions are ready to answer the queries and the complexities that are coming out of the cryptocurrencies.
