Rajiv Jain Highlights Role Of Lawyers In Upholding Justice And Human Rights

The legal profession stands as a cornerstone of justice and human rights, with lawyers playing a crucial role in upholding the rule of law and advocating for fundamental freedoms. Addressing an audience of accomplished young lawyers, Rajiv Jain began by acknowledging their contributions to the legal profession and the broader cause of justice. He linked the occasion to the recent anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on 10th December, a milestone in advocating for equality and dignity for all individuals. 

Jain highlighted an often overlooked yet significant declaration: the 'Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers', adopted on 7th September 1990 during the 8th United Nations Congress on the Prevention of Crime and Treatment of Offenders in Havana. He explained that the document outlines both governmental obligations to ensure an independent judiciary and the ethical duties of lawyers. 

Reading directly from the declaration, Jain underscored that lawyers must maintain the honour and dignity of their profession, acting as essential agents in the administration of justice. Their responsibilities, he said, include advising clients on their legal rights and obligations, protecting their interests through appropriate legal actions, and assisting them before courts, tribunals, and administrative authorities. 

In fulfilling these duties, lawyers are called upon to uphold human rights and fundamental freedoms recognised by national and international law, while adhering to the highest standards of ethics. Jain noted that the declaration emphasises loyalty and diligence as key virtues for legal professionals, urging them to act freely and with integrity in their clients' best interests. 

Expressing optimism for the future, Jain addressed the younger members of the legal fraternity, encouraging them to embody these principles and live up to the expectations set forth by international and domestic laws. He concluded his address by congratulating the recipients of the '40 Under 40' awards, recognising their achievements as a testament to the profession’s enduring commitment to justice and human rights. 

The speech served as a poignant reminder of the indispensable role lawyers play in society, not only as advocates for their clients but also as champions of justice and human dignity.
