SC Declines To Entertain Haryana's Plea Against Quashing Additional Marks

A vacation bench of Justices Abhay S Oka and Rajesh Bindal refused to interfere with Punjab and Haryana High Court orders, which quashed Haryana's notification that granted 5 per cent additional marks to domiciles of Haryana in recruitment exams

The Supreme Court on Monday refused to interfere with the High Court's order quashing Haryana's policy of granting additional marks to its domiciles in recruitment for certain posts.

A vacation bench of Justices Abhay S Oka and Rajesh Bindal refused to interfere with Punjab and Haryana High Court orders, which quashed Haryana's notification that granted 5 per cent additional marks to domiciles of Haryana in recruitment exams.

Haryana State Staff Selection Commission has moved the Supreme Court to challenge Punjab's and Haryana's High Court's May 31 order. P&H HC set aside Haryana's notification giving five per cent bonus marks on socio-economic criteria of the domicile candidate.

The top court called it a populist measure by the state government.

The Haryana government, however, defended its decision and said that the policy was introduced to provide opportunities to deprived families.

Meanwhile, the Haryana government took multiple decisions on Sunday for the benefit of the other backward classes in the state. Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini announced these decisions.

The state government has increased the upper-income limit for the creamy layer to Rs 8 lakh per year.

The reservation for backward classes has been increased from 15 per cent to 27 per cent in Group-A and Group-B government posts.

Creamy layer is a term used in Indian politics to refer to some members of a backward class who are highly advanced socially as well as economically and educationally.

The government announced that the backlog of jobs for Backward Classes A and B will be filled on a priority basis, for which a special recruitment campaign will be run.
