Page Limit For Pleadings In Supreme Court Needed: Justice Ravindra Bhat

Pleadings can run into hundreds of pages. The concoction of facts and law often makes for a lengthy read.

Time is a luxury in the court of law

Judges are pressed for time,  and a lawyer only gets a few minutes to present his case. While the time per case varies from case to case, time is a luxury in the court of law, and concise and succinctly drawn-up pleadings can help a long way in using this luxury in the most efficient manner possible.

Pleadings need to be short

While hearing a public interest litigation seeking a Uniform Judicial Code, Justice Ravindra Bhat remarked on the urgent need for lawyers to cut down on the number of pages in their pleadings.

Referring to SLPs, Justice Bhat said there could be a page limit in the future.

While standardisation is a possibility, the element of uniformity in pleadings also depends on the craft of a lawyer behind it.
