Legal Education Offers Many Options To The Students: Dr Adish C Aggarwala

There are several options available for law students today. They can become a lawyer who can practise in the court and can join as a law officer. They can go into judicial systems and can also go into the field of education. Legal services now offer plenty of options. This was stated by Dr Adish C Aggarwala, President, International Council of Jurists, London, Chairman, All India Bar Association, President, Supreme Court Bar Association, Ex. Acting Chairman, Bar Council of India. 

He was addressing the gathering at BW Global Legal Summit and Legal Leader Awards 2023 as the Guest of Honour. Dr Aggarwal said that it is a sad scenario that students take admission in law colleges even after taking loans to pay the fee. But I am sad that they do not get that much in return for the amount they pay in college. Everyone thinks that they will become Ram Jethmalani, Soli Sorabji. But they are unable to find good work and their parents just wait for them to earn good money. 

The senior advocate said that the basics of law should be taught at an elementary level and it will reduce the number of litigations. “I wrote a letter to the Prime Minister that law should be taught to everyone in school. Basic principles of law should be studied in school. This will lead to reduction in the number of litigations as the people will be more aware about the basics and their rights.” 

Dr Aggarwal also spoke on the importance of a teacher in shaping the life of a student. “The teacher should understand how to create a sense of responsibility in the student. Here I would like to request the teaching faculty to look for what is lacking among our students. As a student joins college, they should see what they can do. Which field is the best for them? We see that in schools there is a meeting of parents and guardians, where there is a discussion about the areas in which the child can do better work and their overall performance. The teacher should understand the background of a student and counsel them for their career,” said the eminent lawyer. 

He added that a teacher can help guide a student for the best options. Citing an example, he said that if a student is brilliant, they can become a judge. The teacher should tell them that if they get selected for judicial service in the first year, they can retire as a High Court judge. The role of a teacher becomes very important.
