The first transformation in the field of law education is the transition from chance to choice. Earlier, many people joined law by chance, not by passion or choice. But today, for 3000 seats in CLAT, we see 70,000 students appearing. This makes it clear that people now choose law. This was stated by Prof. (Dr.) Ranbir Singh, Governing Council Member, IFIM Law School Future of Legal Education, who was addressing the BW Global Legal Summit and Legal Leader Awards 2023.
“There is a close connection between law and justice. There are examples like the naxalite movement which emerged when justice was delayed. There are 5 crore pending cases in Indian courts and increasing,” said Prof Singh, talking about the Indian judicial system.
Connecting the legal profession to the Indian freedom struggle and many more historical events across the globe, Prof Singh said that law is a very noble profession. “We all know about how many lawyers were a part of the Indian freedom struggle. Who helped in restoring democracy in Pakistan? All across the globe we have so many examples of lawyers who have been part of great revolutions,” said Prof Singh.
Talking about law as a career choice, Prof Singh further said that now there are several options when one studies law. “Teaching is the last choice but still, adds to the noble profession. I feel so happy when I see young law professionals choosing teaching after their LLM. It is really good,” he said.
Concluding his address, he quoted the famous artist Michealangelo and said, “Before me, all are my students and as a teacher, my job is to chisel and bring out the best from them.”
