The incident has not only got the whole nation talking but it has also put Uttar Pradesh under the scanner. The video of the incident went viral on social media which made matters worse.
People on the microblogging website expressed their outrage over the sheer lawlessness apparent from the unfortunate and deadly turn of events. The Uttar Pradesh Government has come in the line of fire of late for frequent incidents of lawlessness. Be it the suspicious death of a Mahant, communal tensions or incidents of rape and corruption. The Lakhimpur incident accentuated the talk around violation of basic fundamental rights in the state.
Soon after the incident, cries of registering an FIR against the minister Ajay Mishra's son started doing the rounds. It has been alleged that Ashish Mishra was driving the vehicle when 4 farmers were crushed to death. Subsequently a PIL was filed in the Allahabad High Court demanding a CBI probe of the incident. The PIL also expressed concerns over the danger to peace and security of the people in the state and asserted that the Yogi Aditya Nath Government has failed to secure the fundamental rights of the people.
The political brick batting around the grave incident twisted the case further. Politicians from opposition parties were not allowed to visit Lakhimpur to express solidarity with the farmer families under the pretext of security reasons. The situation reached a crescendo when Priyanka Gandhi was detained in Sitapur late Tuesday evening while she was on her way to Lakhimpur.
The Supreme Court took notice of the incident and listed the case for sou moto hearing within 24 hours on Wednesday considering the ramifications of the incident and the wide public interest involved.
