The BW Legal World Future of Legal Education Summit 2024 witnessed a profound exploration into the integration of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles and climate consciousness within the legal framework. 

Moderated by Ritu Gupta, Professor of Law at NLU Delhi, the session brought together distinguished voices from the legal and corporate sectors to delve into the imperative shifts and challenges facing legal education in the era of sustainability.

Opening the discussion, Professor Ritu Gupta emphasised, “ESG is not just a buzzword; it's a foundational pillar shaping the future of legal practice and corporate governance.”

Amit Kapur, Joint Managing Partner at JSA, Advocates & Solicitors, highlighted the evolving landscape, stating, “Climate consciousness demands proactive legal strategies. Adapting to net-zero goals is not just a compliance issue but a moral imperative for legal professionals.

Sanjeev Gemawat, Group General Counsel at Vedanta Group, underscored the corporate perspective, affirming, “Organisations are increasingly aligning with ESG norms not only for compliance but as a strategic imperative for sustainable growth.”

Zameer Nathani, Group General Counsel at CarDekho, brought attention to practical implications, noting, “ESG diligence is now integral to investment decisions, driving a paradigm shift towards sustainable business practices.”

Vaibhav Kakkar, Senior Partner at Saraf and Partners, advocated for future legal professionals, stating, “Embracing ESG as a career path is not just lucrative but essential for shaping a responsible legal ecosystem.”

The session gave insights on how legal education must evolve to equip students with the interdisciplinary skills needed to navigate complex ESG frameworks. Speakers emphasised the need for a holistic understanding of environmental laws, governance frameworks and societal impacts.

In closing, Professor Ritu Gupta reiterated, "Legal education must integrate robust ESG frameworks to prepare students for the ethical and legal challenges of tomorrow."

The session thus concluded on a forward-looking note, urging stakeholders to embrace ESG principles as central to the future of law and sustainability.
