Please throw light on what drove you towards the legal profession.

My journey into the legal profession was sparked by a fascination with problem-solving and a desire to advocate for justice. From a young age, I was drawn to the idea of using the law as a tool to protect rights, resolve disputes, and foster positive change. As a corporate lawyer, I am driven by the opportunity to navigate complex legal landscapes, mergers and acquisition transactions, negotiate agreements, and support businesses in achieving their objectives within ethical and regulatory frameworks.

Tell us about your roles and responsibilities as Chief of Staff and Legal Counsel at Novistra Capital.

As Chief of Staff and Legal Counsel at Novistra Capital, my responsibilities are multifaceted and demanding. In my role, I oversee the seamless functioning of the company's operations while also providing legal counsel across various aspects of the business. This entails developing and implementing strategic initiatives, managing regulatory compliance, negotiating contracts, coordinating transaction documents and due diligence and mitigating legal risks. Additionally as a key advisor to senior management, offering insights on legal matters and contributing to decision-making processes. Balancing the operational and legal aspects of the business requires a proactive and interdisciplinary approach, as I work closely with teams across the organization to achieve our goals while safeguarding legal integrity.

How do you see the role of an in-house lawyer changing in the near future?

The role of an in-house lawyer is undergoing a significant transformation in response to evolving business landscapes and regulatory environments. In the near future, in-house lawyers will increasingly be expected to act as strategic partners rather than mere legal advisors. This shift entails a greater emphasis on proactive risk management, anticipating legal issues, and integrating legal considerations into broader business strategies. In-house lawyers will be called upon to collaborate closely with internal stakeholders, providing insights that drive innovation, growth, and compliance. Moreover, with the rise of technology and globalisation, in-house lawyers will need to possess a diverse skill set, including proficiency in data privacy, cybersecurity, and international law. Adaptability, agility, and a proactive mindset will be essential traits for in-house lawyers navigating this dynamic landscape.

In a field as dynamic and multifaceted as law, staying abreast of legal developments, industry trends, and emerging technologies is crucial. Embracing change and proactively seeking out opportunities for growth enable me to evolve both personally and professionally. Additionally, upholding ethical integrity is non-negotiable, as it forms the bedrock of trust and credibility in the legal profession. For aspiring legal professionals, I recommend cultivating strong communication skills, fostering relationships, and seeking mentorship from seasoned professionals. Building a diverse skill set, pursuing meaningful experiences, and embracing challenges with resilience and determination are key to thriving in the legal field.
