The legal profession has evolved by leaps and bounds over the last few decades. From only a few general practice areas available for lawyers in yesteryears, the legal profession presents tremendous opportunities for lawyers to specialise and grow in their careers today. Reflecting on how times have changed for the better, Dr Lalit Bhasin, Managing Partner, Bhasin and Co drew parallels between the practice of law and the medical profession.
A law student has many options
"In our times, for any kind of ailment, there was only one family doctor. Whether it was a headache or a gastro problem, nowadays there are specialists for everything. This is where the legal profession comes in. In those days, I started with a general practice, nowadays a student has so many options", he said.
Speaking at the BW Legal World 40 Under 40 Summit, 2022, Dr Bhasin shared important nuggets of practical wisdom from the treasure trove of his experiences. He emphasised that young lawyers must manage their goals and expectations in the first few years and focus on learning the ropes.
Knowledge of procedure paramount
For the first few years, focus on learning about the practice of law. You cannot become a good lawyer if you do not know about the procedures.
Dwelling on the other aspects that define the makings of a successful lawyer, Dr Bhasin said that it is very important to possess a global outlook and a multi-disciplinary approach towards learning the law.
"And once you become a successful lawyer, focus on giving back to society", he said in his concluding remarks.
