Speaking at the formal launch of live proceedings of Gujarat High Court, Justice Ramana on Saturday said that the Supreme Court is working towards implementing the open court concept and is looking to start live steaming of its court proceedings soon.
The logistics are being worked upon so that live streaming of some of its courts can be started soon.
An advocate for integrating technology in judiciary in a cost effective manner, justice Ramana considers live streaming an essential part of Article 19 of the Indian Constitution. He also believes that live streaming of court proceedings would instill a greater degree of public confidence in the judicial system.
Besides, virtual proceedings are also been seen as a potent mechanism to make the judicial system tangibly accessible to the low income strata of the Indian society. It can aide in alleviating issues such lack of awareness and make it easier for the people to access courts and attend hearings from any part of the country.
Virtual streaming of proceedings can demystify the justice delivery system for the common man and would advance the cause of making the judicial process more transparent for the public, he said.
Live Streaming can solve the problem of misinformation and misreporting.
Highlighting that live streaming can be the most potent tool to prevent instances of misreporting and misinformation, Justice Ramana said that it will prevent vested interests from misinterpreting and amplifying information by giving it a different color.
The virtual launch of the live streaming of proceedings of the Gujarat HC was also graced by Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice MR Shah.
Adopting live streaming of proceedings of Gujarat High Court was on the cards after the massive success of the pilot exercise launched last year in October. The move to telecast live proceedings of the first court of Gujarat High Court was met with a thunderous response.
If numbers tell a story, this pilot exercise had garnered more than 41 lakh views with 65000+ subscribers in around 8 months on the YouTube Channel of Gujarat High Court.
