MLA Bayron Biswas Switches from Congress To TMC

Congress MLA Bayron Biswas recently defected to the TMC. He had won from the Sagardighi seat which has been considered a stronghold of the TMC. After winning, Bayron Biswas had expressed his dissatisfaction with the Congress on several occassions. He said, "I couldn't work for the people while being in Congress, which is why I defected to the TMC. I will now receive more support from the TMC. I always wanted to contest on a TMC ticket. Why is Congress calling me a traitor now? Congress had no role in my victory; otherwise, they could have won in the 2021 Assembly elections."

He joined hands with the TMC through Abhishek Banerjee and Banerjee mentioned how Bayron Biswas will be a strong voice against the Centre's deprivation of funds for West Bengal. However, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury believes that Bayron Biswas has been forced to join the TMC brigade, while BJP State President for West Bengal, Sukanta Majumdar believes strongly that Bayron Biswas wanted to join TMC for a long time and he has not turned to be a traitor, but has always been one.

It is pertinent to mention that the Saraidighi seat has always enjoyed the support of Muslim voters who make up the majority and Bayron's winning in the bye-polls was a sign that the Muslim voters were swaying towards the Congress. TMC has thus reached out to win their confidence by showing solidarity during the Ramnavami Violence, banned The Kerala Story, among other things over the past few months. Howvever, ahead of the 2024 polls, this camp switching with the help of Banerjee can also contrarily be apocalyptic for the TMC that had been preaching fair elections as the defection of the only-Congress MLA to the TMC could be seen as political-poaching, the idea that have been associated with BJP in West Bengal.

Advocate of the Calcutta High Court, Shoumya Shubhra Roy has written to the Speaker, Biman Bandopadhyay, requesting him to remove Biswas as a MLA on grounds on duping his voters and has forwarded a copy of the letter to the Election Commission of India as well.

It must however be understood that Bayron Biswas's exists will not attract the anti-defection law against him and in the past the law has been seen as inadequate be it for the non-specific time period within which the decision is to be taken, the delay by the Speaker, resignation from the seats to bring down the house's number or switching over to the majority party being the only one from his own party in this case.
