Stand-Up Comic Kunal Kamra Faces Criminal Contempt Over his Mocking Tweets in Arnab Goswami Case

Controversy's favourite child Kunal Kamra in legal trouble again

Mr Kunal Kamra lands himself in fresh trouble. He is known to take jibes and make trolling remarks against the system. His verbal digs at Arnab Goswami have made news previously as well. In fact, his infamous flight questioning of Mr Goswami where the later choose to remain silent, is memes material even today. Mr Kamra faced a airline ban for his behaviour.

However, this time Mr Kamra finds into serious trouble. Two Pune based lawyers had written a letter to A.G. KK Venugopal over his tweets against the Supreme Court's order directing the Rigad Police to release Arnab Goswami on interim bail.

AG K.K. Venugopal allows initiation of criminal contempt proceedings

AG KK Venugopal has granted his consent for initiation of contempt proceedings against controversial stand-up comic Kunal Kamra, over his tweets about the Supreme Court. Mr Kamra had taken to the microblogging platform to tweet against the Supreme Court's order granting the release of Arnab Goswami on interim bail.

Mr Venugopal took note of the displeasing comments made and called them highly objectionable.

"I find that today people believe that they can boldly and brazenly condemn the Supreme Court of India and its judges by exercising what they believe is their freedom of speech. But under the Constitution, the freedom of speech is subject to the law of contempt and I believe that it is time that people understand that attacking the Supreme Court of India unjustifiedly and brazenly will attract punishment under the Contempt of Courts Act, 1972."- K.K. Venugopal

Kamra's controversial tweets in brief

Kamra took to Twitter yesterday soon after the Supreme Court's order was out in the public domain. In his first tweet, he called the Supreme Court as the Supreme Joke of the country. This was followed up by a morphed photo which showed the Supreme Court in saffron colour with a BJP flag flying over it. If this was not enough, he made scathing remarks attacking Justice Chandrachud by comparing him to a flight attendant serving champagne to first-class passengers.

Supreme orders Mr Goswami's release on interim bail on Wednesday

The Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered the release of Arnab Goswami and the co-accused on interim bail. The matter was listed before the vacation bench of Justices D.Y. Chandrachud and Indira Banerjee. Mr Goswami had filed an interim petition challenging Bombay High Court's order denying him bail on November 9. He was arrested along with two others – Feroze Shaikh and Nitish Sarda for allegedly abetting the suicide of Anvay Naik back in 2018.

The case witnessed strong arguments and remarks in the Supreme Court from both sides. A copy of the order can be accessed here.
