Senior Advocate Fali Nariman Passes Away

Eminent jurist and senior counsel Fali S Nariman passed away on Wednesday.

Nariman started his law practice from Bombay High Court and he was designated as a senior advocate by the Supreme Court of India in the year 1971. He was appointed as Additional Solicitor General in the year 1972. He resigned from the post to mark his protest against the National Emergency declared by the Indira Gandhi regime.

Nariman had made significant contributions to the constitutional jurisprudence. He had appeared in cases such as Golak Nath case, SP Gupta case, TMA Pai Foundation case etc. He had also represented Union Carbide in the case of Bhopal Gas Tragedy, which he later regretted. He had also appeared in the Supreme Court AoR case in which the process of appointment to the higher judiciary came to be established.

Nariman was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in the year 2007. In his autobiography, "Before Memory Fades", he has elaborated on his life journey and law.

His son, retired Justice Rohinton Nariman, is a former judge of the Supreme Court of India.
