SC Directs Baba Ramdev To Personally Appear In Court

The Supreme Court of India, on March 19, directed the Co-founder of Patanjali Baba Ramdev and Managing Director Acharya Balkrishna to attend the Court hearing on the next date in the matter of a writ petition filed by Indian Medical Association against the misleading advertisements by Patanjali.

Bench comprising Justice Hima Kohli and Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah heard the plea today and took note of the fact that the reply to the contempt notice issued by the Court had not been filed.

Senior Advocate Mukul Rohatgi appeared on behalf of Patanjali and submitted before the Court that a reply could not be filed and it was a short reply. The Court took exception to the fact that a reply had not been filed by Patanjali.

The Court had issued a show cause notice to Patanjali for contempt of its order which had restrained the company from making misleading claims in its advertisements. The plea by Indian Medical Association had alleged that Patanjali was making misleading claims against the effectiveness of Allopathic medicines.

The Court had restrained Patanjali as per Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act 1954 from continuing to make misleading claims in its advertisements.
