Politics Over Food In Lakshadweep: SC Issues Notice

The Supreme Court has directed the inclusion of meat products in the midday meals of Lakshadweep school students.

The top court issued notice to the centre and the Union territory on an appeal filed against the order of the Kerala High Court. The said order had dismissed the PIL challenging the order of the Lakshadweep administration.

Politics over food in Lakshadweep

The petitioner has alleged that the administration has been curtailing meat products including chicken ever since Praful Patel took charge in December last year. The politics over food is seen by locals in the island as a direct attempt to change the lifestyle of the people. 

Meat an integral part of Lakshadweep cuisine

However, 70 percent of Lakshadweep's population is Muslim. A look at the evolution of the cuisine in the Union territory would tell you that fish, beef, chicken,  rice and coconut are an integral part of the diet of the locals in Lakshadweep. Not to forget, the Kerala influence in food preparation

While the administrator’s aim is to prevent cow slaughter, the locals see the move of banning meat products as an attempt to force food and lifestyle changes on them.
