Parliament Gives its Nod to National Commission for Homoeopathy

Parliament passes two bills to improve administration of Indian system of medicine

Parliament has given a green signal to two bills that propose a medical education system which improves access to quality and affordable medical education. The two bills are:

  1. The National Commission for Homoeopathy Bill, 2019.
  2. The National Commission for Indian System of Medicine Bill, 2019.

This is done to ensure the availability of adequate number and quality of homoeopathy professionals across the country.

Earlier this year, Rajya Sabha had passed these bills earlier on March 19, 2020. This nod coupled with the approval from the Lok Sabha signifies that the two bills are set to become laws after obtaining the formal approval from President Ram Nath Kovind, which is yet pending.

Bills criticised for excluding yoga and naturopathy

Opposition members like MP Shashi Tharoor protested against the two bills. The main objections raised were that the Centre needed to undertake a wider consultation regarding the bills. It was also pointed out that the suggestions of the Standing Committee were not incorporated in the bills. The exclusion of yoga and naturopathy from the bills also raised a few eyeballs.

Proposed bills in line with national health goals

Health Minister Harsh Vardhan believes that the proposed laws will help in better administration of homoeopathy and Indian system of medicines. The Union Government said that the proposed legislations promote equitable and universal healthcare which encourages better community health. These bills make the services of such medical professionals accessible to all citizens. Moreover, they are instrumental in the promotion of national health goals and encourage medical professionals to adopt the latest medical research with an objective, periodic and transparent assessment by the medical institutions.
