All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) Member of Parliament Mahua Moitra on Monday in a fiery speech that has stoked controversy claiming "India is in a state of undeclared emergency" and alleged that the government of making propaganda and disinformation "a cottage industry".
Attacking the Narendra Modi government on different fronts, including the three farm bills, CAA and migrant deaths. Mahua Moitra commented on the appointment of a "former CJI" that was accused of sexual harassment and then presided over his own trial.
The powerful words of Moitra, where she challenged the judiciary and refused to be cowed down amid the efforts of the treasury benches. Instead, she repeated her allegation and traced the factors responsible for what she said was the lack of judicial independence.
Her speech was so full of conviction that even the speaker, N K Premachandran, of the RSP, was too astounded to make any serious attempt to stop her. With the demand for "Repeal or nothing," for the farm laws, she was a force to reckon with and concluded her speech.
Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi had said the action would come under a rule that says that a member "shall not reflect upon the conduct of persons in high authority unless the discussion is based on a substantive motion drawn in proper terms." Adding that a motion for privilege could be moved against Mahua Moitra for her remarks, which have since been expunged, seen as targeting former Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi.
However, as she spoke about a former Chief Justice, currently is not considered as a ‘higher authority’, the legal opinion was in favour of the Trinamool Congress MP.
