Lifetime Monthly Payment of Retired Supreme Court Judges increased by the Centre

An amendment has been notified to the Supreme Court Judges Rules 1959 by the Ministry of Law and Justice. 

This amendment seeks to increase the lifetime monthly payment of the retired judges of the Supreme Court and this also includes the Chief Justice of India.

Earlier, a retired Chief Justice of India (CJI), during his lifetime has entitled to a payment of rupees twenty- five thousand per month according to Rule 3B of the Supreme Court Judges Rules. Similarly, a Supreme Court Judge was entitled to a lifetime monthly payment of rupees fourteen thousand. Henceforth, according to Supreme court Judges (Amendment) Rules 2021, the same amount for CJI has now been increased to rupees seventy-five thousand per month and for the Supreme Court Judge, it has been hiked to rupees thirty-nine thousand per month.
