Leegality is a legal-tech start-up enabling enterprises to eSign, Instant Stamp and manage their document processes digitally. We help our clients eliminate dependence on paper; exponentially increasing efficiency while reducing cost by 90 percent.
Beginning of our journey at Prarambh
Since 2016, Leegality has witnessed rapid growth in terms of its product, scale, clients, and team size. Leegality today services 200 plus clients spanning more than 25sectors such as Banking, Finance, Property Management, Insurance, etc. While the team continues to learn fast on the job, we still felt a need for a more structured process to address legal complexities and a myriad of modern-day business challenges.
When the opportunity to apply to Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas’ (CAM) incubator ‘Prarambh’ opened up in May 2019, we saw a natural fit for a legal-tech start-up to be incubated at one of India’s most coveted law firms.
Experience at Prarambh
The structure of incubation was well-planned and relevant to the three start-ups incubated as part of the programme. As a first step, the Prarambh team led by Komal Gupta (Head of Innovation and Artificial Intelligence at CAM) ensured the assignment of mentors as per the area of expertise relevant to the respective start-ups. While Leegality was assigned several Partners at the firm as mentors, it was Anuradha Mukherjee (Partner in Dispute Resolution) who steered the programme as our primary mentor.
Over the past six months, the mentors spent several hours with the Leegality team, understanding and discussing the product and providing insightful responses to our queries. CAM also generously extended its vast resources of online legal databases and library books to help our team research and create detailed literature on rapidly evolving areas such as digital signatures, electronic evidence, etc.
Another very helpful facet of the Prarambh incubation was the regular sessions conducted by industry experts on critical areas usually relegated to the backburner by start-ups. These sessions were client-centric (such as a seminar on technology adoption by General Counsels), on basic business skills (such as financial management, funding strategy, branding), on due-diligence (such as corporate compliances) and in the form of case-studies (by a founder of a well-acclaimed legal-tech start-up from Canada). This balanced approach complemented the rigorous techno-legal sessions with our mentors and led to a holistic improvement in our approach towards our own start-ups. It also immensely helped that Mr. Cyril Shroff (Managing Partner), Mrs. Vandana Shroff (Partner), and Mr. Rishabh Shroff (Partner) were directly involved in planning of the programme.
Way Forward for Leegality
The past few months at Prarambh have been very exciting. We are actively collaborating with the CAM team to prepare detailed white papers on topics such as eSigning, stamping and electronic evidence in India. CAM’s experience with legal documents and contracts across industries will be vital in ensuring that the white papers have a practical focus and are useful for any individual or corporate entity engaged in commercial transactions.
Taking technology in its stride, CAM itself is piloting Leegality’s services to eSign internal and external documents and leading from the front to revolutionise the way documents are managed and executed in the Indian legal industry. This adds to CAM’s reputation of accelerating the deployment of legal technology in India to make legal services more efficient and client-centric.
We look forward to continuing to engage with the Prarambh team and exchange ideas and learnings with the future cohorts at Prarambh.
