Government has received its fair share of criticism for not making timely appointments
The appointment of a Chief Information Officer was due after the retirement of Mr Bimal Julka. It is pertinent to point out that the government has received a fair share of criticism for failing to fill up the position in a regular and timely manner. Time and again, NGOs and social activists have taken the judicial route to make the government accountable to fill the post of CIC.
Activist Anjali Bharadwaj had recently moved Supreme Court for urgent filling of the vacancies
Recently, RTI activist Ms Anjali Bhardawaj had filed an urgent application to highlight how continued delay in appointments of Information Commissioners to State and Central Commissions is resulting into a rising number of backlogs before the Commission. In her application, Ms Bharadwaj had also mentioned that as many as 36000 applications are pending before the Commission to point out the gravity of the situation.
Failure to make appointments in a timely and transparent manner reflects the shortcoming of the government fulfilling the objective of the RTI Act.
