A suo motu case has been registered by the Supreme Court to investigate alleged attacks by paramilitary and police on farmers, protesting against Farm Laws on Delhi borders.
Punjab University students write an open letter to demand court intervention
The case was registered on the basis of an open letter written by the students of Centre for Human Rights and Duties, Panjab University. The letter point outs the predicament of the farmers and seeks the court’s intervention. The letter highlighted that the farmers were forced to march to Delhi after two months of peaceful protests in their concerned states and they were tortured by police. Further, the letter claims that instead of addressing the problems of farmers, the government along with media outlets are portraying the protestors as separatists.
The letter seeks an investigation into the alleged torture inflicted on the farmers by the Haryana Police
The letter seeks an investigation of the torture inflicted by the use of tear gas shells, lathis and water cannons them by the Haryana Police. Along with this the letter also seeks the directions of the court to be issued against Delhi and Haryana Police, directing them to withdraw all cases registered against the farmers on political vendetta. The petitioners have also prayed for action against media channels which are engaged in misrepresentation and polarisation of the issue.
