The Bench of Justices U U Lalit and Ashok Bhushan passed the order while dismissing the fugitive businessman's plea for review of the Court's 2017 verdict.
The 2017 verdict convicted Mr Mallya for Contempt of Court. This was because of the fact that Mallya violated the Supreme Court’s direct order and transferred US $40 million to his children’s accounts in foreign banks. Thereafter, the SBI led consortium of banks filed a contempt petition in this regard.
While dismissing the petition, the bench stated, “Now that the review petitions are dismissed, we direct respondent No 3 (Mallya) to appear before this Court on October 5 at 02:00 PM and also direct the ministry of home affairs, the Government of India to facilitate and ensure the presence of respondent before this Court on that day.”
Mallya is currently in the UK and the issue of his extradition is an ongoing one. Though the government of the United Kingdom wants to ensure justice, it is not able to set a timeline for his extradition.
