Emerging Technology Is A Disrupter In Legal Domain

Technology is disrupting every field today. Today, at the BW Global Legal Summit and Awards 2019, organized by BW Businessworld, legal teams and advisers discussed the emerging technology trends in the legal industry.

Among the panelists were, Rajeev nair, Associate General Counsel, HP India; Hemant Kumar, Group General Counsel, L&T; Salman Waris, Partner – Head TMT and IP Practice Techlegis; Shahswant Sikka, Co-founder, Provakil and Sanjay Maurya, CEO, Legal Lion. The session was chaired by Ramanuj Mukherjee, Ipleaders.

Shahswant Sikka, Co-founder, Provakil said that the most impactful field will be law in terms of technological disruption. “Delivery of legal services will change dramatically”, he said.

Participating in the discussion Rajeev Nair, Associate General Counsel, HP India said, “The general perception is that lawyers and technology don’t go together and I don’t agree to that. Everyone has an aversion to technology. We have adopted AI for about 6 months now, and every now and then we come across challenges but get over it. It is a disruption which has to happen, we adopt it now later, and it is on us.”

Hemant Kumar, Group General Counsel, L&T further shared his experience with the technological disruption happening in the legal space, he said, “For L&T, we have advantage of having more than 30 concepts across the world and being dominated by engineers. For technology adaption, you need to keep budget in check and add-on at continuous pace. More depository you give to engineers, more result you will get.”

Talking about the software service for legal domain, Maurya said, “The information provided on these software helps the people in taking immediate action. The data and management documentation system lacks in organisations these days and to manage the gap between external council, management and internal team technology has to be adapted.”

“We try to leverage technology as a tool to cover, for both, lawyers and also provide quality to clients. And in that process we realised that it is a big call for an organisation in terms of budget. Investing regularly is a step that everyone has to take in terms of technology,” said Salman Waris.
