The proposal to introduce Manusmriti to the undergraduate law program at Delhi University was withdrawn on Thursday, July 11, after the faculty registered their protest with the administration. The proposal was to include the ancient Hindu text in the jurisprudence syllabus.
The University Vice Chancellor Yogesh Singh said that the papers on the said issue will be removed before presenting them before the Academic Council, as per reports.
As per reports, Manusmriti was slated to be included in the revised syllabus which was supposed to be put up before the Academic Council for giving its approval.
Several members of Delhi University Academic Council had said that the move had political undertones and it was devoid of merit.
Manusmriti is an ancient Hindu text which elaborates on rights, duties, laws and conduct. Its contents are in contrast with our Constitutional concepts of law and fundamental rights.
