Delhi High Court issued a notice to the state government in a petition filed by Md Shahabaj and others, pleading for interim and full compensation for the victims of the riot.
With their houses burnt and having lost everything, the Petition was filed seeking compensation for those who came under the blow of riot in the north-east part of Delhi. The Single Bench of Justice Navin Chawla while issuing notice for the same, asked the State Government to file a counter-affidavit within four weeks.
The compensation scheme of the state government is not adequate: says the petitioner
In the plea, the petitioner argued that the sufferer of this riot (broke out in the month of February) instantly needs compensation but the amount prescribed in the compensation scheme of the state government is insufficient. The petitioner further called Delhi governent's assistance scheme as arbitrary and discriminatory. It was also claimed that the amount of compensation prescribed in the assistance scheme is not comensurate in comparison with the financial losses and trauma suffered by the victims of the communal violence.
Constant denial of compensation is noting but pathetic attitude of the system towards riot victims
The petitioners further contented that they were presented with an un controllable and unanticipated situation consequent to a complete breakdown of law.
‘They are in everlasting fear of the mob, that they might also be set on fire by the bloodthirsty monsters. Amidst the same they left their houses with everything behind, in fact they are not able to gather enough courage to go back and bring their important documents. They are exhausted by the efforts made to reduce themselves from the mobs, the petitioner said.
In view of the submissions made, the bench issued a notice to Delhi Government. The next hearing in this matter is scheduled on February 15, 2021.
