The Union Government today assured the Supreme Court that it will not take any coercive actions against the Indian National Congress regarding an income tax demand of around Rs 3500 crores until July 2024 due to the impending Lok Sabha elections.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the government, said this before a bench comprising Justice BV Nagarathna and Justice Augustine George Masih during a hearing related to a civil appeal filed by the Congress party.
The Congress party had sought a stay on recent tax notices and High Court findings. The Solicitor General clarified that while the issue in the appeal was not directly about the recent tax notices, they would defer any coercive actions considering the election circumstances.
The Supreme Court bench noted this statement and scheduled the next hearing for July 24, 2024, mentioning that the Rs 3500 crore demand was not strictly relevant to the ongoing appeal's controversy.
