Central Power Ministry Notifies Electricity (Rights of Consumers) Rules, 2020


The Electricity (Rights of Consumers) Rules, 2020. rules state the duties of every distribution licensee to supply electricity. The rules also stipulate the rights of the consumer to have minimum standards of service from the distribution licensee.

The Central Power Ministry Notifies Electricity (Rights of Consumers) Rules, 2020 also provide clarity on the following points: 

  • Procedure for release of new connection 
  • and modification in existing connection, 
  • Billing and payment of bills online.
  • Method of payment of Bills,
  • Reliability of supply
  • Disconnection and reconnection

Besides, the above points, the rules mandate for having an automated infrastructure in place to manage and monitor power outages.

There are also provisions for setting up a Consumer Grievance Redressal Forum and enhanced customer service like starting call centre for facilitating better customer service.
