The Supreme Court has delivered a verdict that upholds the secular tradition and structure of the Constitution – while a Ram Temple will be built on the disputed site in Ayodhya, a mosque will be built over five acres on alternate land.
There are no losers here. This is a continuum of Indian civilizational and secular tradition where a historical wrong has been corrected.
It’s to the credit of the governments at the Centre and in UP, that a call for restraint has been made. The judgement must be accepted by one and all with equanimity.
Going by the initial reactions, even the Sunni Board has accepted the verdict, calling Lord Ram Imam-e-Hind.
Now, the ball is in the Centre’s court, which has been asked to constitute a trust that will oversee the construction of a temple at the designated land in Ayodhya.
Significantly, the verdict by the five-judge bench was unanimous. Hopefully this is a closure of a highly contentious issue that has extracted high historical price.
