Arbitration Must Be Efficient In Terms Of Cost, Says CJI Chandrachud

The Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud on Saturday inaugurated a newly constructed arbitration centre in Allahabad High Court, he also launched a book 'Courts of Uttar Pradesh. Speaking at the inauguration the CJI said the Prayagraj arbitration centre is not dependent either on financing or support from the Allahabd High Court.

"The idea of having an arbitration centre called Prayagraj arbitration centre is to truly indicate that this is the centre of arbitration that is not dependent either on financing or support from the High Court... By creating this venue, we want to create a process of arbitration which is efficient in terms of cost, timeline... If arbitration takes time as long as a suit takes in court then why people will go for arbitration" said CJI DY Chandrachud.

The Chief Justice also spoke on the key role played by technology in the judiciary.

"The idea behind introducing technology in judiciary is to make us more efficient judges but most importantly to take the work which we do to the lives of our citizens. Technology is a very key instrument in ensuring that the work we do does not remain aloof from the community but takes it right to the heart of the community", the CJI said.

The CJI highlighted how digitisation of the records had aided in the judgement process during the Article 370 hearing.

Earlier on Friday, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud said that Allahabad has remained a centre for knowledge and exchange of ideas for centuries.

While addressing the inaugural ceremony of Dr Rajendra Prasad National Law University in Prayagraj he also said that lawyers play vital roles in nation-building and justice.

"Allahabad has remained a centre for knowledge and exchange of ideas for centuries. The University of Allahabad, which is considered the Oxford of the East remained a beacon of knowledge for the last 137 years, Lawyers have significantly contributed to nation-building," the CJI said.

He further said that there is a wider process of nation-building in which lawyers have a very vital role to play.

"Lawyers play a crucial and multifaceted role in society, contributing to the functioning of legal systems and promoting justice. They represent individuals and entities ensuring that their rights are protected," he added.

Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath emphasised that the rule of law is fundamental to good governance.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of Dr Rajendra Prasad National Law University, held at the Medical Association's auditorium, the CM underscored the crucial role of the Bar and Bench in achieving this objective. "Bar and Bench always supported in establishing the good governance model of Uttar Pradesh."

UP CM Adityanath emphasised the significance of maintaining public trust in the judicial system, stating that a loss of faith in democracy could lead to unrest.

"We all should always strive to further strengthen all the pillars of India's democracy," he added.

Furthermore, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath stressed the importance of dialogue in a democracy, highlighting that individuals with grievances have various avenues to directly communicate their concerns to the government.
