AG KK Venugopal Declines Consent for Contempt Against Congress MP Digvijaya Singh Over Controversial Tweets

Advocate Suman Sudan raises concerns about Digvijaya’s Tweets

Advocate Suman Sudan wrote a letter to the Attorney General seeking the initiation of contempt of court over the tweets of Digvijaya Singh. The senior congress politician had posted a couple of tweets against the formation of Special Security Force (SSF) by the Yogi Aditya Nath government. Mr Singh's views on Twitter suggested that he considers the powers vested to SSF as unreasonable and unconstitutional.

In the letter, Advocate Sudan raised concerns that the tweets constituted serious scandalous allegations upon the dignity and sanctity of the Supreme Court and its judgments. The tweets also hurt the sentiments and have the potential to shake the faith of the country in the justice delivery system, the letter claimed.

The statements are uncalled for but they do not merit action for criminal contempt: KK Venugopal

While declining to grant consent to initiate criminal contempt of court proceedings against Congress Rajya Sabha MP, Digvijaya Singh the Attorney General said,

"I am in receipt of your request for consent to initiate action for criminal contempt against Shri Digvijaya Singh on his twitter page. I am proceeding on the basis that the tweets referred to have actually been made by Shri Digvijaya Singh. I have given careful consideration to the two tweets. The statements are wholly uncalled for. However, I do not believe that they merit action for criminal contempt."
