A Public Interest Litigation ( PIL) has been filed before the Bombay High Court which sought to relax the 75 percent criteria in the Higher Secondary examinations that is needed to be eligible for taking admissions in the Indian Institute of Technologies through the JEE examinations.
The National Testing Agency(NTA) which is responsible for conducting majority of the national level entrances like JEE, NET and so on, has been asked by a bench of Justice SV Gangapurwala, Acting Chief Justice and Justice Sandeep Marneasked to file its response to whether the top 20 percentile ranks can be a qualifying factor in this regard.
The bench also asked the Counsel appearing on behalf of the NTA to take instructions as to how the 75 percent criteria was determined and asked the Counsel to file an affidavit within the next week. The Court also held that the there was no such criteria until the last year and this sudden introduction of the percentage criteria shall be detrimental for a lot of test takers who have focussed on their Entrance examinations more than their boards and have scored high in the former, but might not have the 75 percent marks in their Board examinations. Besides this, the Court also highlighted discrepancies in the cut off across states which could also be another deterrent factor for the students.
