The Bangalore Urban District Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission Directed Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) to pay compensation of Rs.2000 to a man who was refused a change of Rs.1 for a bus ride, as reported by The NewsMinute.
A man Ramesh Naik boarded a BMTC bus from Shantinagar to Magestic bus depot in 2019. He was issued a ticket for Rs.29. The complainant paid Rs.30 for the ticket but the change of Rs.1 was not returned to him. Aggrieved by this, he approached the district consumer forum seeking compensation of Rs.15,000.
A counter affidavit was filed by BMTC stating that the matter was of trivial nature and denied allegation of deficiency of service.
In the light of the aforementioned, the commission observed that the dispute was brough before it as a matter of right. Hence, it should be appreciated and recognised as the right of the consumer. The bench also noted that in such cases complainant is entitled for the refund of relief.
The commission directed BMTC to pay compensation of Rs.2000 to the man and pay an additional sum of Rs.1,000 towards the litigation expenses of the complainant. The amount was ordered to be paid within 45 days from the date of the order. Failure to do so would lead to application of an interest rate of Rs.6,000 per annum.
