In Conversation With Nandish Vyas, Partner, AZB And Partners

How and when did you know becoming a lawyer was your life’s true calling?

I realised this when I was 7 or 8 years old, when I observed my father reading and preparing arguments for his cases, which I found fascinating as a process.

Would you please tell us about your specialisation and the array of work you handle at your firm?

I have been focusing on M&A and Private Equity transactions. Over the last few years, the focus on Private Equity deals has increased particularly on account of PE funds regularly looking at majority buyouts.

What are your predictions for 2022 in the area/s of specialisation mentioned above? What are some of the upcoming trends of the industry?

2022 is going to be a busy year! The trends are likely to include an increase in acquisitions by well-funded unicorns, continuing trend of large PE to PE exits and a lot of action in consumer-focused businesses.

One recent landmark judgement or the best judgment of 2021 that you’d like to share a word about.

The Supreme Court’s judgment in Ireo Grace Realtech which confirmed that consumer fora have the power to set aside one-sided and unconscionable contractual terms is one of the interesting judgments of 2021.

As a new age lawyer, what to your mind is the one thing in the current legal ecosystem at the Bar, Bench, or in the Law Firms that needs our attention.

A disciplined system for disposal of pending cases (with accountability) at the lower courts, along with focused judicial training particularly at tribunals and lower courts. Within firms, we need to seriously focus on improving the work culture and making life easier and less complicated for younger lawyers.

Many Congratulations on joining the BW Legal World Elite 40 Under 40 Club of Achievers 2021. What to your mind has helped you get to where you are and what advice would you have for others who want to set off in a similar direction?

There is no substitute for hard work and deeper thinking on matters! If this remains the focus, then success and achievements are bound to follow.

As a final note, would you please recommend to our readers your favourite book that left a lasting impression on you.

There are many, but a must-read for lawyers would be To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. It covers so many themes that are relevant even today and is narrated in a warm and human manner from the eyes of a six-year-old.
