Bombay High Court Begins Uploading Marathi Translation Of The Judgements

Shortly after the Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud announced that the Electronice Supreme Court Reports (eSCR), the Bombay High Court has started uploading some of it’s judgements in Marathi on its website.

The judgements are being uploaded under the heading of “Nivadak Nirnay” and a totality of three judgements have been made available under the category.

Previously while announcing neutral citations for Supreme Court Judgements, The Chief Justice who has always been a staunch supporter of technology had discussed initiatives including Escr and translation of judgements in local languages. He explained that all the judgements would be translated in all the languages but the translation can be difficult and a team of district judges and researchers are working on it.

He remarked- “We are also translating all judgments in all languages. And we're using machine learning tools and that is being verified by team of district judges. 2900 supreme court judgments are translated so far. Sometimes translations can be difficult. Because for example if we say "leave granted", it may literally translate to "avakash prapt ho gaya" so there is a team of district judges and law researchers assisting. Supreme Court will be funding it all."

The judgements translated and uploaded on the website of The Bombay High Court have been shared with the disclaimer that they only meant as a study material and English version of the judgements will be used for official purposes.

Currently, Kerela High Court also began publishing judgements in Malyalam.
